On 28th September 2022, an inauguration ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of roof rehabilitation at Dom Bosco Fatumaca in Gariuai Village, Baucau Administrative Post, Baucau Municipality. The ceremony was organized by Dom Bosco Fatumaca that received funding from the Embassy of Japan to implement the project. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Masami KINEFUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste, local government officials of relevant authorities, stakeholders, teachers, school staffs, and students.

Ambassador Kinefuchi first congratulated on the appointment of Cardinal Virgílio do Carmo da Silva who is one of the great alumni of Don Bosco Fatumaca as the first Cardinal from Timor-Leste, and then saying, “Not only the Cardinal do Carmo da Silva, but also many eminent leaders in this country are from this renowned school. They play important roles in politics, business, industry, science, engineering, education and so on. The school has a long tradition and great reputation.”

Talking about this project, he praised the way it was implemented. “I am so impressed that the rehabilitation works were undertaken by the Don Bosco School community including students and teachers themselves. So the funds were used only to purchase good quality materials and the project was accomplished with maximum efficiency. This approach can be a model for other projects because it represents a strong sense of ownership that should be more stressed in this country.”

Ambassador emphasized on the importance of education for elites as well as general public, and explained the various Japanese assistances for that cause all over the country, including that of UNTL Engineering Faculty. Moreover, he encouraged students to apply for scholarships to study in Japan and also to work in Japanese companies and universities. Even for the youngsters without academic degrees, he explained that both governments are currently discussing how to utilize the existing Japanese program, whereby young workers acquire skills while working in Japan and after three years they can either choose to get a new job in Japan and stay there or return to Timor-Leste to contribute to the nation building.
