Japanese Ambassador reiterated Japan’s assistance in TL over 20 years focusing on health sector and expressed readiness for the further assistance at the Inauguration Ceremony of Health Post in Souro Village, Lautem Municipality

     On July 28, 2022, H.E. Ms. Odete Maria Freitas Belo, Minister of Health and Mr. Masami KINEFUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste celebrated the completion of a health post in Souro Village, Lospalos Administrative Post, Lautem Municipality. They were joined by representatives of Ministry of Health and Lautem Municipality, among others.
     At the Ceremony, Ambassador Kinefuchi first talked about 20 years of Lasu Amizade no Solidariedade between Japan and TL, saying, “Japanese government has been supporting the nation building of Timor-Leste for more than 20 years, including the time before restoration of independence.”
     According to the Ambassador, the health sector is one of the focus areas of Japanese assistance. “Working closely with the Ministry of Health and partnering with UNICEF, JICA, Japanese NGOs and local NGOs etc., the Japanese government has funded various projects that worth more than $35 million in total in order to improve healthcare services in Timor-Leste.” 
     “Through these projects, we provided human resources development in primary healthcare and mother and child healthcare, constructed local clinics and health posts as well as improved primary healthcare services in remote areas.” 
     “On top of that, our support for the fight against the pandemic amounted to more than $20 million apart from the vaccines, and of which $11 million was allocated to Ministry of Health-related projects. ”   
He added that Japan is now bringing JICA team to TL to explore the possibility of future Japanese assistance projects, including National Hospital in Dili.
    The Ambassador also mentioned the importance of mother and child health, showing the “Mother and Child Health Handbook” to the people of the community, saying “this booklet was originally created in Japan 80 years ago, then spread all over the world including Timor-Leste.” 
     He is pleased that the current version of the booklet is much better than the original one and it is popular in Timor-Leste. He wished that all Timorese mothers fully utilize it in order to ensure healthy growth of their children.
     He concluded his speech by stating that Japan will continue to support the development of Timor-leste with the spirit of Lasu Amizade no Solidariedade.
