On July 27, 2022, teachers and students of Aelafa Primary School warmly welcomed Mr. Masami KINEFUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste, with the presentation of Tais and traditional dance as he visited and inaugurated the school in Daudere Village, Lautem Administrative Post, Lautem Municipality. The construction of this school was completed in November 2020 with the assistance of US$90,699 under the Japanese government’s scheme of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). FUNDAMOR, a local NGO, implemented this project. They were joined by the Secretary of Lautem Municipality, the Administrator of Lautem Administrative Post, the chief of Daudere Village, the staff of FUNDAMOR as well as the members of the local community.
Mr. Kinefuchi stated “I’m pleased to come to this beautiful place and to see this new school building with all of you today. Japanese assistance to Timor-Leste over more than 20 years has been quite substantial, including large-scale infrastructure projects. We assisted to construct the national road No.1 from Dili to Baucau. Before this project, it took more than 5 hours from Dili to Baucau, but now it takes only 2 hours. On the other hand, we also believe in the importance of the smaller-scale projects such as school constructions that can directly benefit the local people.”

He also emphasized that “we also support human resource development in Timor-Leste. We have several scholarship schemes for students to study in Japan. If you’re interested in it, please join these programs in the future.”
The goal of the project is to improve the educational and sanitary environment in Aelafa Primary School. More than 100 students benefit from the new school building with three classrooms and five rest rooms.
The GGP has launched 132 projects in all 13 municipalities since its first project started in 2000. The programs mainly provide basic infrastructure assistance, including school facilities, public clinics, and water supply systems, to meet a variety of basic human needs at the grassroots level.
