Government of Japan’s support through NGO Peace Winds Japan “Distribution of emergency materials to people affected by the Severe Tropical Cyclone Seroja and basic infrastructure recoveries”
2021/6/16

On 16 June 2021, the Government of Japan has decided to provide another disaster relief through Japanese NGO in addition to USD 500 thousand assistance through PARCIC (Please visit: https://www.timor-leste.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/11_000001_00147.html).
This time, an assistance of 300 thousand USD will be allocated to “Peace Winds Japan” for their support in physical infrastructure development in Dili municipality.
Cyclone Seroja has caused devastating damage to roads and houses in many parts of the country. Disruptions in the roads caused by the flood have cut off access to some areas, making it difficult to reach out to the people in these areas with basic items necessary to rebuild their lives.
“Peace Winds Japan” will provide material and technical assistance for the reconstruction of roads affected by the recent flood as well as items to meet basic needs of the local community. Peace Winds Japan will coordinate and cooperate closely with IGE (Instituto De Gestão De Equipamentos, Ministry of Public Works) to carry out the project activities.
This project is expected to benefit more than 600 households who are in urgent need of basic items, and more than 8,700 households that will regain access to basic items by using the repaired roads in Dili municipality.
This is one of the assistances Japan is providing in relation to the recent disaster, including the USD 1 million funding to the ADB for "Hamutuk Serbí Komunidade" project implemented by UNDP, and more projects will be announced soon.
Also, Japan has provided various assistances amounting to more than USD 16 million (including USD 4.6 million assistance for 38 ambulances and other medical equipment) to Timor-Leste for its fight against COVID-19 since last year.
