On 20 May 2021, the Government of Japan has decided to provide additional disaster relief of 500 thousand USD through Japanese NGO “PARCIC”

Cyclone Seroja has caused devastating damage to roads and houses in many parts of the country. Disruptions in the roads caused by the flood have cut off access to some areas, making it difficult to reach out to the people in these areas with basic items necessary to rebuild their lives.

In order to tackle this problem, the Government of Japan, through NGO PARCIC, will assist physical infrastructure development in Ainaro and Manatuto municipalities.

Specifically, this project will provide material and technical advice for the reconstruction of roads and houses affected by the recent flood as well as items to meet basic needs of the local community. PARCIC will coordinate and cooperate closely with the local community, village chief, and the local authority to carry out the project activities.

This project is expected to benefit more than 650 households whose houses were destroyed, and more than 1,300 households that will regain access to basic items by using the repaired roads in both Ainaro and Manatuto municipalities.

This is one of the new assistances Japan is providing in relation to the recent disaster, most recent being the USD 1 million funding to the ADB for "Hamutuk Serbí Komunidade" project implemented by UNDP: more will be coming soon.
Also, Japan has provided various assistances amounting more than USD 16 million (including $4.6 million assistance for 38 ambulances and other medical equipment) to Timor-Leste for its fight against COVID-19.
