Great East Japan Earthquake

Aftermath of the unprecedented earthquake that hit Japan at 14:46 on March 13, many lives are lost. There are still a lot of people missing. There is no appropriate word to describe the scale of this tragedy.

The Japanese Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Naoto Kan continues conducting search and rescue operations.

Prime Minister Gusmao immediately responded to this by holding an emergency cabinet meeting on Saturday (12/3) after his arrival from overseas, and on behalf of the government and the people of Timor-Leste offered sincere condolence and utmost supports to Japan. We are all touched deeply by this warm support extended by the people of Timor-Leste.

We, the Japanese people, help each other in unity and be assured, will overcome this unprecedented disaster.

Solidarity Donation for the Victims of Earthquake and Tsunami
in Japan by KSNUJTL of UNTL

The solidarity donation for the victims of earthquake and tsunami in Japan is conducting by KSNUJTL (National Solidarity Committee of Timor-Leste University Youths) of Timor-Leste National University. According to KSNUJTL, the activity will continue until 27 April 2011.
According to the group leader, the group consists of 60 students and divided into 4 groups. Each group brings one donation box and spread in Dili.

We thank the kind initiative by KSNUJTL!  We are very much encouraged by the warmhearted support from the people of Timor-Leste.

We received a donation from the students of São Pedro Junior High School!

On April 21, the teacher and four students of São Pedro Junior High School, Dili (Enrollment: 830) visited the Embassy of Japan and handed over their warm-hearted contributions and their encouraging messages for the relief of sufferers of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

When the students knew serious damage caused by the tremendous earthquake and following tsunami in Japan, they voluntarily organized their efforts to raise money at the school, wishing that they could help affected Japanese people including their generation even in some small way. The students have put their own contributions, starting from 5 cents or 10 cents, from their pocket money into a donation box, which amounted to US$312 in three weeks. This amount is worth a two or three-month wage of workers in Timor-Leste. The students conveyed big and warm hearts to us.
