The Government of Japan provides Antiviral Medicine

against Pandemic H1N1 Swine Influenza

July 17, 2009

His Excellency Mr. Iwao Kitahara, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Democratic Republic Timor-Leste, handed over Antiviral Medicine against Pandemic Influenza to His Excellency Dr. Nelson Martins, Minister of Health, at a handing over ceremony at the Ministry of Health on 17 July, 2009.

This ceremony was realized as one of the fruitful outcomes of His Excellency Prime Minister Gusmõ’s official visit to Japan in March this year. At the summit meeting between the two Prime Ministers, responding to Prime Minister Gusmaõ’s expectation, Prime Minister Aso said that Japan would consider possible assistance such as the provision of antiviral medicines against pandemic influenza for stockpile in Timor-Leste.

At the ceremony, Ambassador provided more than 40,000 capsules of antiviral medicine. The Government of Japan will also provide the government of Timor-Leste with Personnel Protective Equipments (PPE) such as protective suit in due course of time.

Also, Japan is now working hard to make a new arrangement with the ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Secretariat on the guideline for the use of ASEAN stockpile of antiviral medicines and PPEs for Timor-Leste. After the amendment of the guideline, when pandemic influenza happens in Timor-Leste, Timor-Leste will be equally treated with the ASEAN countries for distribution of medicines and PPEs which were donated by Japan.

Ambassador Kitahara stated at the ceremony that he was pleased with this cooperation as a follow-up of the visit of Prime Minister Gusmaõ to Japan and the timely provision of the medicine at this time of expansion of pandemic influenza in the southern hemisphere in winter.
