1. Japan recognized Timor-Leste on 20 May 2002 when Timor-Leste became independent, established diplomatic relations and opened the Embassy of Japan in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste (the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia was concurrently in charge). In January 2002, Japan physically opened its Embassy office in Dili and dispatched H.E. Mr. Hideaki Asahi as the 1st Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste. In January 2006, H.E. Mr. Kenji Shimizu presented credentials as the 2nd Ambassador and in September 2008, H.E. Mr. Iwao Kitahara as the 3rd Ambassador. On 12 May 2006, the Government of Timor-Leste opened the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Japan. On 19 September 2006, the then President H.E. Mr. Kay Lala Xanana Gusmão appointed the then Advisor of International Relations to the President, Mr. Domingos Sarmento Alves, as the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Japan. On 15 November 2006, Ambassador Alves presented credentials to the Emperor of Japan.
