The Japanese government welcomes applications from nationals of Timor-Leste who wish to study at Japanese universities as research students for 2010. The purpose of this scholarship is to give an opportunity to receive post-graduate education in Japan.
1.Fields of Study
Fields of study must be subjects which are offered at Japanese universities.
2.Qualifications
(1)Nationality: Applicant must have the nationality of Timor-Leste.
(2)Age: Applicant must have been born on or after April 2, 1975.
(3)Academic background: Applicant must have academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate. An applicant will be deemed to have academic ability equal or superior to that of a university graduate, if he/she has completed or will complete a 16-year school curriculum in a foreign country (or an 18-year school curriculum if he/she desires to enroll in a doctoral course in the field of medicine, dentistry or veterinary science or pharmacy).
(4)Major Field of Study: Applicant should apply for the field of study he/she studied at the previous university of any related field.
(5)Japanese Language: Applicant must be willing to learn the Japanese language, interested in Japan and enthusiastic about deepening his/her understanding of Japan after arriving, and capable of engaging in study and research while adapting himself/herself to life in Japan. If he/she desires to enroll in programs taught in English, a good command of English is required.
(6)Health: Applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to pursue study at university.
(7)Arrival in Japan: Applicant must be able to leave for and arrive in Japan between the 1st and 7th of April 2010.
3.Scholarship Benefits
(1) School fees will be paid by the Japanese government.
(2) Round trip flight ticket costs from Dili International Airport to Narita International Airport (in Tokyo) will be provided by the scholarship. (economy class)
(3) Allowance: During the fiscal budget of 2009, each grantee will be provided monthly stipend of 152,000 yen. The scholarship will not be paid to a grantee who takes a leave of absence or is long absent from his/her university.
4.Selection Process
(1) The Embassy of Japan in Timor-Leste will perform primary screening of applicants based on application documents, written examination and interview.
(2) Those who have passed the screening of the application documents will be contacted by the embassy and be notified the schedule of the written examinations and interviews.
(3) Written examinations will be English and Japanese tests.
(4) The applicants who have passed the primary screening at the Japanese embassy will have to go through the secondary screening by the Japanese Ministry of Education.
(5) Those who have passed the secondary screening will be notified by the Embassy of Japan.
