1. MEXT Scholarship Program


There are several schemes to go to Japan to study. Please check the information below.
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study in various courses in Japanese institutes and universities.
(1) RESEARCH STUDENT
Research Student Program is for those who aim to be enrolled in a master’s course, a doctoral course, or a professional graduate course at a graduate school, or who are conducting research in a specialized field at an undergraduate department, graduate school, institute attached to a university. Timorese under 35 years old with bachelor or master degree is eligible to apply. For more information, please check Application for Research Students.

(2) UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT
Undergraduate student program is for those who aim to be enrolled in an undergraduate course at a university. Timorese under 25 years old with high school diploma is eligible to apply. For more information, please check Application for Undergraduate Students.

(3) COLLEGE of TECHNOLOGY STUDENT
This program is for those who aim to be enrolled in a course of study or in an advanced course at a college of technology.
Under the application guidelines, MEXT calls for applicants who will study in a one-year preparatory course and then will be enrolled into the third year of the course at the college of technology and receive specialized education for three years (in the case of maritime engineering, for three and a half years.) Timorese under 25 years old with high school diploma is eligible to apply. For more information, please check Application for College of Technology Student.

(5) TEACHER TRAINING STUDENT
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international teachers who wish to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities. 2. JENESYS

JENESYS is a people-to-people exchange program between Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Approximately 2,000 people will participate in this yearly program. Objectives of JENESYS is to promote mutual trust and understanding among the peoples of Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, and to build a basis for future friendship and cooperation, and to encourage an understanding of Japan’s economics, society, history, diverse culture, politics and diplomatic relations.

3. JICA Program
(1) JDS: Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid
The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid (JDS) is to support human resource development of the Japanese grant aid recipient countries. JDS Project targets the highly capable young officials (mainly government) who are expected to engage in implementing social and economic development plans as a future leader.
JDS Fellows are also expected to contribute to the enhanced bilateral relations between their countries and Japan, with well-rounded knowledge of Japan. JDS Project offers 2-year Master's courses at Japanese Universities in English. JDS Fellows will get a special opportunity for directly learning the forefront knowledge in the technological environment as well as for building the wide human networks. Every year, 8 government officers have been selected and sent to Japan since 2019.
(2) JICA Development Study Program by Technical Cooperation Project.
(2)-1. SDGs Global Leader
In order to promote development cooperation for achieving SDGs, needs for developing human resources are growing who will contribute to appropriate policy decision and its implementation for tackling development issues in respective fields. In light of this, JICA offers a program to enhance the capacity of mid-career public officials, academic researchers and other relevant individuals, who are expected to contribute to the socioeconomic development of respective countries. The program will provide participants with a special program on Japanese development experiences as well as a degree program in a Japanese university. Participants also have some opportunities to participate Networking events, Japanese language classes, internship program and others.
Implimented Period: From 2020 to 2024

(2)-1. Human Resources Development in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
Developing countries need more high skilled human resources in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), who can contribute to the development of industrial sector. Such human resources are in urgent need to address global issues and to reduce brain drain to developed countries too. This program aims to develop educational and research capacity of leading universities in the target countries in order to further contribute to STI and industrial development, by enhancing capacity of academic staff of these universities through Ph.D. study at Japanese universities.

(2)-3. Agriculture Studies Networks for Food Security (Agri-Net)
The second goal of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) aims to “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. This will require adequate agricultural policies and introduction of appropriate technologies for stable food production. JICA provides this program aiming to enhance the capacity for agriculture and rural development policy, sustainable agricultural production, one health, marine resources/fishery development, food value chain, and nature conservation through Doctor’s / Master’s course in Japanese Universities

(3) JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP)
Long-Term Training on Seismology, Earthquake Engineering, and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation.
This program aims to increase capacities of officials, engineers or researchers who are conducive to earthquake and tsunami disaster management. In this course, participants will acquire Japan’s leading knowledge and technologies on seismology, earthquake engineering and tsunami disaster mitigation.
