On 21st September 2022, Masami KINEFUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste, attended an inauguration ceremony of a new girls’ dormitory in Costa Village, Pante-Macassar Administrative Post, Oecusse-Ambeno Special Administrative Region. The ceremony was organized by the congregation, Carmelite Sisters, that implemented the project. Local government officials of relevant authorities, stakeholders, and students who will actually use the dormitory joined in the ceremony.
Ambassador KINEFUCHI congratulated all the participants of the new dormitory project and extended his gratitude to Carmelite Sisters for the successful construction work and said, “This project might not be a big one as compared with other Japanese assistance projects like Oecusse Ferry Terminal, but is surely an important step to improve the environment of the education here in this region. I believe the accumulation of these small efforts all over the country will bring better conditions for the education of young generation. “For this project, the Government of Japan provided $90,895 through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security (GGP) scheme.
Thanks to the construction of this dormitory, starting from next year, more than 30 students will no longer need to commute long way to school but stay at the dormitory and continue their study at 5 neighboring schools.
GGP is a small grant scheme launched in 2000, and since then, 132 projects have been implemented in 13 Municipalities under this scheme. GGP projects aim to improve community infrastructure, including construction and rehabilitation of school facilities, public clinics, and water supply systems, addressing various basic human needs at the grassroots level.
