Government of Japan and NGO Frontline Signed a Grant Contract for “Improving Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH) in Ermera Municipality”
2022/2/8

On February 8, 2022, the Grant contract for the second year of project “Improving the reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) in Ermera Municipality” was signed between Mr. Masami KINEFUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste, and Ms. Kayono NAKAJIMA, NGO Frontline Country Representative. The amount of grant is US$360,277.
In Timor-Leste, the current estimate of maternal mortality rate is 2.15 per 1,000 live births and stillbirth rate is 18 per 1,000 total births. The number of deaths in Ermera municipality is higher than other municipalities and most deaths occur in rural areas.
The objective of this 3 years project is to increase access to high-quality RMNCH service and to improve maternal and child health in Ermera municipality. This project organizes childbirth education classes for mothers, conducts training for health workers, and supports RMNCH system development. The project will also motivate mothers to continually seek healthcare services through such means as health promotion card in the Maternity Building at Guisarudu Health Center which was newly inaugurated under this project with the assistance of people from Japan.
Through this project, more than 4,000 pregnant women will be able to receive obstetric ultrasound examination with the assistance of well-trained health workers, which helps to find the irregularities in mothers and decrease the number of maternal mortality.
Ambassador KINEFUCHI encouraged the Frontline to make further effort toward successful implementation of the project and said, “Good health in mothers and children are the key factors for prosperity and development of the country. I hope this project brings happiness to mothers, children, and people of Timor-Leste, by fully utilizing Japanese invented “Mother and Child note, which is available more than 50 countries, including Timor-Leste”
