The Government of Japan Handed Over Ambulances and Medical Equipment to combat the spread of COVID-19

On 12 May, 2021, Ambassador of Japan in Timor-Leste handed over ambulances and medical equipment to combat the spread of COVID-19. The equipment handed over with this project, amounting to US$ 4.6 million, includes 38 ambulances, 12 emergency carts, 765 blood pressure manometers, 765 stethoscopes, 12 autoclaves, 10 infant incubators, 18 syringe pumps, 70 bedside monitors and, 240 hospital beds and 2 generators. These medical equipment will be used at the National Hospital Guild Valadares, Isolation facility of Vera Cruz and 5 referral hospitals (Baucau, Maubisse, Maliana, Covalima, Oecusse). These ambulances will be used in all municipalities.
At the ceremony, Ambassador KINEFUCHI Masami addressed “As for the battle against COVID-19, I would like to applaud the efforts made by the Government and the people of Timor-Leste to contain this ferocious pandemic. Now is the time for all of us to be patient and continue our efforts in fighting against this virus. Looking back the nation’s history, in the fight to restore independence, you all demonstrated a long-time endurance and solidarity. So I believe you can overcome whatever the difficulties you face.”
H.E. Mrs. Odete Maria Belo, Minister of Health stated “On behalf of the TL Government, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Government of Japan.” ”With the ambulances and essential medical equipments donated, many more patients can be treated and many more lives will be saved.”
So far, Japan has committed to providing more than 16 million USD of assistance for COVID-19. This includes supporting vaccine deployment through providing cold chain equipment including regional cold storage facilities and transportation.
