1. On 9 November, Japan and Fundasaun Haksolok Timor Leste (FHTL) jointly held an inauguration ceremony of “The Project for Improvement of Water Supply System in Viqueque District” in Aflocai and Babulo Villages, Uatolari Sub-district, Viqueque District. On behalf of the Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Kenji Inoue attended the ceremony. Mr. Tomas Soares da Silva, Administrator of Uatulari Sub – district celebrated the completion of the project with the local community. This project was implemented under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots as the first Japanese assistance project in Viqueque District.
2. The Government of Japan provided US$ 94,555 for this project to install a water supply system in Babulo and Aflocai villages. Before implementing this project, the villagers had to walk for several hours to get to the nearest water source. With the completion of the project, the villagers can access to clean and safe water without difficulty. It is expected to provide sufficient clean water to Babulo and Afloicai Villages and to prevent water-borne diseases. Mr. Inoue emphasized that this first project in Viqueque District would contribute to consolidate peace and facilitate development in both villages.
3. Mr. Tomas Soares da Silva, Administrator of Uatulari Sub – district who attended the ceremony appreciated the assistance of Japan to provide water supply system. In his remarks he accentuated that the people in Aflocai and Babulo villages would need to make a effort to maintain the provided facility by their own. In addition, he encouraged the villager to make the most of the water supply system to improve their own sanitary condition with the safe and clean water which they can now access.
4. On this occasion, Mr. Inoue expressed anew his heartfelt gratitude to the NGO members, the government officials concerned and the people in the community for their concerted efforts in making this project a reality.
