Japan's Assistance to Timor-Leste



The Signing Ceremony for Providing Grant Aid to Support for Improving Livelihood of the Farmers in Timor-Leste


On June 21, 2012, the Government of Japan held a signing ceremony at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery for Japan’s Grant Contract with PARCIC, a Japanese NGO. The Government of Japan will provide US$291,874 dollars for the “Project for Improvement of Livelihood for the Farmers in Mountainous Areas” under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects, which is a financial assistance scheme to support Japanese NGOs, efforts to meet the diverse needs of the people of Timor-Leste. Mr. Lourenso Borges Fontes, General Director of the Ministry for Africulture and Fishery and Mr. Marcus dos Santos, General Director of the Office of Secretary of State for Energy Policy attended the ceremony.


PARCIC has been carrying out various projects and cooperating with the farmers in Timor-Leste since its independence and enhanced the capacities of their sustainable livelihoods. Through this project, PARCIC will aim to improve livelihood of the farmers by preserving the forest in mountainous areas in Timor-Leste. They will attempt to enlighten the farmers in regard to effective management of natural resources.


Through this project, PARCIC will install the rocket stove to each household of the farmers. The stove will halve the amount of firewood with the increased heating power. Furthermore, women and children will be released from their burden of collecting woods and will be able to use their time for other productive activities.


This project will contribute to agriculture and rural development sector which is one of Japan’s priority areas of assistance to Timor-Leste.
