Japan's Assistance to Timor-Leste

 

 

The Government of Japan Celebrated the Completion of the Construction of Irrigation System in Debos Village, Suai, Covalima District

 

NGO Loro-Matan, in close cooperation with the Embassy of Japan, inaugurated the Irrigation System in Debos, Suai, Covalima District on 30th November 2011. Ms. Hiroko Tsuchiya, representative for the Embassy of Japan to Timor-Leste, Director of NGO Loro-Matan and its staff members, local communities attended this inauguration ceremony to celebrate the completion of the project for Construction of Irrigation System in Debos, Suai, Covalima District.

 

The Government of Japan provided US$92,410 for this project under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Project (GGP).

 

NGO Loro-Matan, recipient of the Japanese grant, has constructed the irrigation systems at Debos village, Suai sub-district, Covalima District. In Debos village, the community people own large area of rice fields; however from time to time, they were facing problems to water the rice fields due to lack of irrigation system facilities.
This project is expected to provide sufficient water for rice farmers in Debos village, contributing to increase rice production and thus enhance food security for the village.

 

During the ceremony, representative for the Embassy of Japan in Timor-Leste, Ms. Tsuchiya, expressed her appreciation to all the staff members of NGO Loro-Matan and the local communities for their concerted efforts to complete this project. Ms. Tsuchiya also mentioned that agriculture and rural development is one of the priority areas of Japanese assistance to Timor-Leste. She said: “I hope that this project has further strengthened the friendship between people of Timor-Leste and people of Japan”.
